These principles apply to its corporate citizenship programmes in India as well. Coca-Cola India CSR’s key areas of focus include waste management and recycling, sustainable supply chain, water conservation and optimisation, sustainable product categories and community welfare.
The Coca-Cola System in India, along with partners is working to develop sustainable, community-led programmes for integrated plastic waste management and promote efficient recycling in India. 61. Havells India

Fast Moving Electrical Goods company Havells is big on the notion of “giving back to the land”. While the global community adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals to improve people’s lives by 2030 in 2015, Havells India claims to have begun working on Goal 2 – ‘Zero Hunger’ as long back as 2005. They were looking for reasons for non-availability of adequate manpower near the Alwar plant. The research showed that children from nearby villages did not go to school. Children were weak and malnourished and going to school was not even considered an option. The management realized that providing food could be the answer to this puzzle. Havells CSR tied up with the government of Rajasthan to provide mid-day meal in government schools. Ownership of the entire mid-day meal value chain from procurement of food materials to food preparation, storage and transportation to school, gives the company complete control over the quality and hygiene of the meals.
In line with the WASH (Water, Health and Hygiene) programme, Havells initiated a sanitation drive in 2014 in government schools of Alwar district wherein the company built eco-friendly bio-toilets. These eco-friendly bio-toilets use special bacteria developed by DRDO (Defence Research & Development Organisation) to convert human waste into biogas and water. The water can be used for gardening, cleaning or ground water recharge. Havells has built over 4000 bio-toilets in 400 government schools in Alwar district of Rajasthan. For menstrual hygiene management, the company joined hands with Project Baala wherein the young rural girls are educated about menstruation in rural schools and provided with eco-friendly sanitary napkins. As of now, the parntership has provided sanitary kits to 22,000 girls across 285 schools in the Alwar District.
All these initiatives helped improve attendance, health and cognitive development, increased girls’ participation, and offered better hygiene in communities and addressed issues of inequity and exclusion.
To preserve our heritage and pass it on to the future generations in the best possible condition, Havells tied up with Aga Khan Foundation India (AKFI) and will contribute towards building Humayun’s Tomb Interpretation Centre. A proposed Interpretation Centre will be the largest public cultural facility built since the National Museum. Havells will also help Aga Khan Foundation to conserve the monument of national importance called the “Sabz Burj” situated at Nizamuddin in New Delhi.
The company has planted over 50,000 trees in and around its plants in Alwar, Rajasthan and Baddi, Himachal Pradesh; and one lakh trees each in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh and Neemrana, Rajasthan. The WASH programme, effected in collaboration with UNICEF for the student population from primary to high-school levels, has been one of Exide’s key programmes that has established diligent drinking water, sanitation and related healthcare models and procedures in the states of West Bengal, Bihar and Assam. The intervention was instrumental in developing the model for replication by UNICEF across schools at the national communities.
Girl child and women-oriented projects remains at the core of CSR interventions since gender parity takes the front stage for Exide CSR when it comes to making provisions for any empowerment initiatives. A livelihood and entrepreneurship enhancement programme for women from tribal villages around their plant in Maharashtra helps to usher in economic and social empowerment for the beneficiaries.
Availing regular and safe transportation to schools and colleges are an ordeal for most of the girls and young women from economically challenged backgrounds in both, remote villages as well as in the suburban areas of larger cities. The free School Bus project plies girl children and young women from a few neighbouring villages and suburban locations at two operation areas of Exide. This CSR project also helped to revive a school which was almost on the verge of closing down due to lack of admissions.
A unique battery-related training centre has been instituted in association with the Savitribai Phule Pune University to provide battery-related training programmes to students aspiring for a career path in the allied industry. School projects developed in association with YUVA Unstoppable saw the creation of replicable models for integrated development of Government schools both at primary and high-school levels.
